Compulsory Basic Training - Part 1

Compulsory Basic Training - Part 1

By law, everyone wishing to ride a moped or a motorcycle (except full car licence holders who sat their car test prior to 1999 and only wish to ride up to a 50cc) must now complete a Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course, also called Part 1. It normally takes a day to complete and is usually taken on a 125cc machine.

What will I learn and do?

After a talk about motorcycle clothing and equipment, you are shown the controls of your own or the various machines that we use. You are then informed about basic machine maintenance etc, prior to beginning simple manoeuvres in order to familiarise you with the machine. Clutch control, balance, braking, slow riding, safe pulling away procedure, to name but a few, are all explained in detail prior to completing simulated left and right turns. If our instructors are happy with your progress you are then taken on the road under vigilant supervision for a minimum of 2 hours.

Certificate of Completion

If you reach the required standard a Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) Certificate of Completion (Form DL196) will then be issued validating your provisional entitlement. This allows the riding of up to a 125cc if you are over 17 or a 50cc if you are between 16 and 17 without supervision but whilst still displaying ‘L’ plates and not carrying any passengers. The Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) Certificate is valid for a period of 2 years.
