The motorcycle test is typically taken on a 125cc or 500cc/600cc. Passing the test on a 125cc, mandatory for under 21's, the trainee is restricted to a motorcycle of no more than 33 bhp for 2 years, after which time a motorcycle of any size can be ridden.

By completing the training on a larger machine (21 yrs + only) and passing the DSA test, the trainee can commence riding a machine of any size immediately. This is called Direct Access.
